This historic railway is sited south of Gateshead in Springwell village just east of the main A1 road near the Angel of the North
Designed by George Stephenson and opened in 1826 the Bowes Railway is the only operational preserved standard gauge rope-hauled railway in the world.
The whole railway, including the buildings, machinery and rolling stock is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is managed by the Bowes Railway Company Ltd. on behalf of the current owners, Sunderland City Council and Gateshead Council.
The Springwell site is open to the public at weekends from 11 am to 4 pm for guided tours etc. However, as the site is run by volunteers please contact the museum before travelling.
