Multi-award winning Battlesteads is renowned for its superb food, warm and welcoming hospitality and outstanding ‘green’ credentials. It’s widely recognised as one of the UK’s top sustainable tourism destinations. From the outside, Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant is a characterful building that instantly speaks of its heritage – it’s a converted 18th century farmstead situated on the doorstep of Hadrian’s Wall country. However, step inside and you soon realise that you’re somewhere quite uniquely special. Sustainability is intrinsically woven into every aspect of the business. From the big stuff – like the carbon-neutral heating and hot water system which serves the entire hotel, and the extensive gardens and two polytunnels which provide fresh fruit and veg for the kitchen throughout the year – to the small stuff, like the locally sourced, natural and organic toiletries in each of the rooms and the use of empty toilet roll cardboard inners for potting seedlings. Owners Richard and Dee Slade have travelled quite a journey since they bought Battlesteads in 2005 and they offer tours of the gardens and green installations to interested customers every day. Our other awards are: GTBS Gold/Gold Star, Considerate hotel of the year 2011, Green Hotel of the year – hotel Cateys, Virgin International Responsible award, North ld Nat parks Auth Bumble bee Award, BII Winelist of the year
